Palm Beach is filling four Planning and Zoning seats
Plus overnight roadwork, a county data-center pause, and the September 8 council meeting.
Here’s what changed in Palm Beach and what’s on the calendar this week. Town Hall is filling four key board seats, Worth Avenue has a new set of renderings, and crews are working several island roads.
Palm Beach is taking applications for three regular seats and one alternate seat on its Planning and Zoning Commission. Residents have until 5 p.m. October 2 to submit an application to the Town Clerk’s office.
The commission advises Town Council on planning and development matters. Three regular members are completing their terms. Two cannot be reappointed because of term limits. The alternate whose seat is opening may seek reappointment.
Town Council is expected to review the applicants and make appointments at its October 13 meeting. The four openings arrive as residents are already looking at new proposals, including planned changes at The Esplanade on Worth Avenue.
The Esplanade has a new set of proposed renderings
Plans submitted to Palm Beach would remake The Esplanade at 150 Worth Avenue and rename it Burlington Arcade at Palm Beach. The proposal covers the valet area, the two-story shopping center’s facade, and an interior courtyard.
The second-floor walkway would get new railings. Storefronts would add new awnings, planters, lighting, and tiling. The landscaping includes bougainvillea trellises and palm trees. Starbucks would remain on the first floor.
Representatives for owners Reuben Brothers and Crown Onyx Investments submitted the plans August 13. The renderings show a proposal, not an approved or scheduled construction project.
Here are this week’s roadwork trouble spots
Several Palm Beach roads are in active work zones this week. Flaggers are posted at Pendleton and Cocoanut Row, on Sunset Avenue, and along parts of North County Road and Cocoanut Row.
Atlantic Avenue between North County and North Ocean is limited to local traffic. So are Seaview Avenue and Crescent Drive. Access to homes will remain open.
Overnight work runs from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. through September 4 on Bradley Place from Royal Poinciana Way to Dunbar Road. Crews are also working at South County Road and Royal Palm Way.
Sidewalk work continues on both sides of South County Road between Brazilian Avenue and Royal Palm Way through September. Allow extra time if one of these stretches is on your usual route.
Sea-turtle lighting rules stay in effect through October
Palm Beach’s sea-turtle lighting rules remain in effect through October 31. Oceanfront property owners must turn off, shield, or redirect lights so they are not visible from the beach.
Artificial light can draw hatchlings inland instead of toward the ocean. The town’s reminder also covers dogs: between Sunset Avenue and Wells Road, dogs may be off leash from dawn until 9 a.m. if they remain under control. After 9 a.m., they must be leashed.
A least-tern colony is active on the island’s north end. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has marked a protected perimeter. Beachgoers and dogs should stay outside posted and fenced areas.
The county moved its data-center pause forward
Palm Beach County moved forward August 27 with a moratorium on new data centers. The pause applies at the county level and does not change Town of Palm Beach development rules.
The county is deciding how to handle this type of large-scale development before allowing more projects to move ahead. The moratorium creates time for officials to write those standards.
The next decisions to watch are the rules the county proposes and how long the pause remains in place.
