South Ocean Boulevard closes near Mar-a-Lago Friday morning

Plus undergrounding crews pulled to storm duty, a landmark condo's award nomination and rooftop jazz.

Friday starts early near Mar-a-Lago: at 5 a.m., A1A there closes to drivers. If your errands or commute run that way, plan ahead and expect delays.

The big story

The shutdown covers South Ocean Boulevard (State Road A1A) from South County Road to Southern Boulevard and starts at 5 a.m. Friday, Oct. 16. Details on traffic checkpoints, revised bridge-opening times and short-term marine security zones are posted on the town's Planned Traffic Impacts webpage. Federal aviation officials have also put a Temporary Flight Restriction in place for VIP movement around West Palm Beach, set for Saturday, Oct. 17, through Sunday, Oct. 18. Comparable limits on roads and airspace have been put in place before when President Donald Trump came to Mar-a-Lago. Neither the town nor federal officials have publicly confirmed whether he will be in Palm Beach this weekend.

Fox Weather's Palm Beach episode re-airs this weekend

Meteorologist Melanie Black taped the Palm Beach segments in September, and the episode aired live Oct. 7 as the season finale of "Fox Weather Beach House," which spent its second season on beach destinations nationwide. Black visited the Worth Avenue Clock Tower, then rode around town with Scotti Williams Luxton, who co-owns Palm Beach E-Bike Rentals, in an open-air electric Lilly Pulitzer Moke. From near the Flagler Museum, Black biked part of the Lake Trail with Luxton and Luxton's sister, Robin Williams. She also walked through Royal Poinciana Plaza. The rerun is set for Oct. 17-18, though Fox Weather has not yet announced an exact time.

FPL storm deployments briefly pause undergrounding work

Storm work pulled the undergrounding crews away twice in 2026, according to Town Engineer Patricia Strayer. The most recent call-up came after Hurricane Isaias, when crews went to the Panhandle. The town's $128 million project, the total for burying power, phone and cable lines and pulling poles, began in 2017. Completion is expected in late 2027. Strayer said the worst single delay from a deployment was about a month, and the overall schedule has not slipped significantly. Because the town keeps no detailed log of deployments, the time each phase lost is unknown. A Sept. 21 memo put Phase 7 South at 65% complete. That section runs north from Atlantic Avenue to Sanford Avenue and Via Los Incas.

A South Ocean condo shares an architect with the Kennedy Center

The condo at 400 S. Ocean Blvd. was one of Florida's first luxury condominiums, and possibly the nation's, and the town made it a landmark in 2011. Its designer, the late Edward Durell Stone, was the modernist behind the Kennedy Center. Stone aimed high for it, calling it "the most splendid and modern building that men, machines and money can erect for Palm Beach's international colony." Stone's son, Edward Durell Stone Jr., handled the landscape design. This year the Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach nominated the building for Docomomo US's Modernism in America Award. Katie Jacob, the foundation's vice president, wrote that it marks a key moment in New Formalism, scaling monumental design down to a restrained home. Docomomo US did not pick it among its 15 winners for 2026.
